This is the EU

Like no other political association, it stands for common values despite its cultural diversity. In this part of the module, we look at the basics of the EU.
Origin
The European Union, or rather its predecessor version, emerged after the Second World War, when its founders wanted to unite European countries economically and politically in order to secure lasting peace and prosperity. Since its creation in 1957, the EU has grown from six countries to 27 countries.
Shared values and goals
The EU is also acting in line with the European motto "United in diversity". The member states share common values on which the European Union is founded:
Human dignity: Human dignity is the foundation of fundamental rights. It is inviolable, to be respected and protected.
Freedom: The free movement of people allows citizens to travel and reside freely within the EU.
Democracy: The Union operates on the basis of representative democracy. This means that all citizens of the EU automatically have political rights and can vote for the European Parliament.
Equality: All citizens have equal rights before the law.
Rule of law: All EU activities are based on treaties democratically agreed by member states. Law and order are upheld by an independent judiciary.
Human rights: The EU Charter of Fundamental Rights guarantees human rights, including the right to freedom from discrimination on the grounds of sex, origin, religion, disability, age, sexual orientation or belief.
One of the main objectives of the European Union is to promote peace, European values and the well-being of its citizens, on the basis of these values. In doing so, it respects its rich cultural and linguistic diversity. Social injustice and discrimination are to be curbed. freedom, security and the rule of law in a border-free area, as well as a fruitful internal market. Overall, economic and social cohesion and solidarity between the member states are to be strengthened. The EU is also strongly committed to the preservation and protection of the environment.
